ARE YOU A HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT NEEDING SERVICE HOURS? Help two old Jews put up a pre-fab sukkah, Sunday, October 13 (rain day reschedule, Tuesday afternoon, October 15). No power tools needed, light lifting required, refreshments available. 2-3 students should be able to do it within 1-2 hours and you're doing a mitzvah too! Contact Eve at eackermanusa@gmail.com.
LOCAL PERFORMANCE OF "It Can't Happen Here" You are invited to attend a performance of “It Can’t Happen Here,” a Radio Play based on the 1935 book by Sinclair Lewis. The production is produced by Actors’ Warehouse and sponsored by the Social Justice Council of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Gainesville. Performances on October 7th and 14th and November 4th, starting at 7:30, will be held at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Gainesville, 4225 NW 34th Street, Gainesville, Florida 32605. Tickets can be purchased by donating at the door on a sliding scale from 10 to 30+ dollars. Proceeds will fund the work of Actors’ Warehouse and the UUFG Social Justice Council. Described by Actors’ Warehouse as “a cautionary dark satire about the fragility of democracy and how fascism can take hold even in the land of liberty,” It Can’t Happen Here follows the ascent of a demagogue who becomes president of the United States by promising to return the country to greatness. The play was initially produced as part of the WPA Federal Theater Project’s “Living Newspaper” series and was performed simultaneously in eighteen cities in the 1930’s. A new adaptation was written by Tony Ciconne and Bennett Cohen and performed at the Berkeley Repertory Theater Company in 2016. A staged reading was performed via Zoom in 2020, and more than 100 theaters across the country were named broadcast partners for the production. Remember, if you never learned about history, you are doomed to repeat it.
Please note: All programs schedule for today, September 26th have been postponed due to Hurricane Helene. Be safe, check on your friends and neighbors. For other unforeseen circumstances, our Lunch and Learn scheduled for this shabbat has been postponed.
